Worker injuries can be caused by accidental:

• Releases of steam and
• Steam explosions.
  

Requirements and Example Solutions:

• The safe working pressure of the vessel's steam system must be determined. [29 CFR 1915.93(a)(1)]
• Appropriate pressure gauges and relief valves must be installed to maintain the proper pressure of the steam system. [29 CFR 1915.93(a)(1)]
• Steam hoses and fittings must have a safety factor of no less than five. [29 CFR 1915.93(a)(2)]
• Steam hoses must be safely hung, shielded against accidental contact, and protected from damage. [29 CFR 1915.93(a)(3) and (4)]

Worker injuries may include electrical shock and burns from electric power supplied to the vessel.

Requirements and Example Solutions:

When electrical power comes from outside sources, the following precautions must be taken: [29 CFR 1915.93(b)(1)]

• If in dry dock, the vessel must be adequately grounded.
• All circuits to be energized must be equipped with adequate overcurrent protection.
