Scaffolds (Staging) ť Independent Pole Wood Scaffolds

An independent pole wood scaffold is a supported scaffold consisting of a platform(s) resting on cross beams (bearers) supported by ledgers and uprights independent of support (except ties, guys, braces) from any structure.

Requirements and Example Solutions

All pole uprights must be set plumb and rest on an adequate foundation. [29 CFR 1915.71(c)(1)]
Light duty scaffolds must not be more than 24 feet in height: [29 CFR 1915.71(c)(2)]
When poles are spliced, they must be in accordance with 29 CFR 1915.71(c)(3).
Ledgers (such as stringer) must be leveled, secured, and adjusted as work progresses. [29 CFR 1915.71(c)(4)]
Bearers must extend beyond the ledgers. [29 CFR 1915.71(c)(5)]
Diagonal bracing must be provided. [29 CFR 1915.71(c)(6)]
Minimum dimensions and spacing of members must be in accordance with 29 CFR 1915.71(c)(7).
