   Overview
   
   The CMAA Alliance provides the association's members and others in the construction industry with information and guidance to help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to construction industry hazards and increasing access to construction industry safety and health information and training resources. Goals of the Alliance include:
   
   Training and Education
    
   • Develop safety and health programs and guidelines on the need for implementing safety and health programs and processes in the workplace.
      
   • Organize and provide the necessary resources for the presentation of OSHA's construction courses to CMAA members when OSHA and CMAA identify the need.
      
   Outreach and Communication
    
   • Develop and disseminate guidance and information at conferences, events, and/or through print and electronic media, and links from the OSHA and CMAA web sites.
      
   • Speak, exhibit, or appear at conferences, local meetings, or other events.
      
   • Cross-train OSHA personnel and industry safety and health practitioners in construction management best practices and/or effective approaches.
      
   • Promote and encourage the CMAA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs.
      
   Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
    
   • Raise awareness through speeches and appearances by CMAA leaders of successful worksite programs and their commitment to workplace safety and health.
   Convene or participate in forums and roundtable discussions on multi-employer worksite issues to help forge innovative solutions.

   Specific activities have not yet been planned to meet the training and education goal of the Alliance. This goal will continue to be discussed by the implementation team during the Alliance's second year.

   • 2002 CMAA National Conference and Trade Show, Coronado Bay Resort, San Diego, CA, October 13-15, 2002
     
     Paula O. White, the Director of the Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs at OSHA, gave a presentation entitled "Extending OSHA's Impact" to the CMAA, which described OSHA's cooperative programs as they relate to the construction industry.
      
   • 2003 CMAA National Conference and Trade Show, Grand Hyatt, Washington, D.C., September 7-9, 2003
     
     Noah Connell, OSHA's Director of the Office of Construction Standards and Guidance, Directorate of Construction, gave an overview of the new Steel Erection Standard. The major aspects of the new standard were described, including the requirements for structural stability, fall protection, and controlling contractor responsibilities.
      
   • Second Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference, Tysons Corner Marriott, Vienna, Virginia, June 9-13, 2003
     
     CMAA participated as an exhibitor.
      
   • CMAA New York/New Jersey Chapter Meeting, April 2003
     
     Paula O. White, the Director of the Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs gave a presentation to a meeting of the CMAA New York Chapter.

   • Safety and Health Topics Page: OSHA Assistance for the Construction Management Industry
     
     CMAA representatives worked with OSHA to develop a Safety and Health Topics page for construction management. This page should help construction managers improve their awareness of common safety issues that exist in today's construction industry and improve worker safety by integrating safety and health into all aspects of the construction process, from the design phase to jobsite management. The page was launched and posted on OSHA's Web site in March 2003.
      
   • "CM Safety Page"
     
     CMAA developed and posted a safety page for construction managers on the association's Web site. The page contains information on the Alliance and links to safety and health regulatory agencies and associations.
      
   • OSHA and CMAA Alliance Web Page
     
     The OSHA and CMAA Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site contains information on the Alliance, Products and Resources, Activities and Events, and Milestones and Successes. The page is updated regularly.

   • October 4, 2002 -- An article on the Alliance was published by www.OccupationalHazards.com; "OSHA, Construction Management Association Form Alliance"

     CMAA has provided its list of Chapters for posting on the Alliance Program's Limited Access page.
     
4. Results
   
   The OSHA/CMAA Alliance has helped increase the public's understanding of how safety and health impacts construction management issues on a job site through the Safety and Health Topics page that OSHA and the Alliance's implementation team created. Now, the public is better able to understand that construction management is a professional service that applies effective management techniques to the planning, design, and construction of a project from inception to completion for the purpose of controlling time, cost and quality.
   
   In addition, OSHA personnel have made presentations at CMAA' annual and chapter meetings helping to increase the construction managers' recognition of OSHA's role on a jobsite. Through these efforts, it is hoped that construction managers will place more emphasis on including safety and health in the construction process. The Alliance information that has been included in the numerous publications, including OSHA's, CMAA's, safety and health journals and e-newsletters, has also helped to focus attention on the need for construction managers to be involved in the safety and health process and with willingness of this group of professionals to work cooperatively with OSHA.

5. Upcoming Milestones
   
   The OSHA/CMAA Alliance implementation team has discussed a number of activities that may be undertaken in the upcoming year. For example, the team may be developing a safety program that would be targeted to medium-sized contractors and cover a number of topics including:
    
   • Definition of the construction managers role
   • What contractors should do on a worksite
   • What information should be available at a worksite
   • OSHA requirements
      
   In addition, CMAA agreed to post information on OSHA's 10 hour construction course on its website and put information on OSHA's Noise in Construction Course in its newsletter.
   
   Upcoming speaking and exhibiting opportunities for OSHA representatives include, the association's Spring Conference, May 17-18, 2004 at the Hyatt Regency Boston in Boston, Massachusetts and its National Conference and Trade Show, September 12 - 14, 2004 at the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk, San Antonio, TX. In conjunction with the CMAA annual conference, the association has asked for 200 - 400 construction-related CDs that could be distributed during the meeting. In addition, there may be an opportunity for CMAA to exhibit during the 3rd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference.
