Overview
Through the Alliance, OSHA and IMA-NA are working together to provide IMA-NA members and others in
the industrial minerals industry with information, guidance, and access to training resources that
will help protect employees' health and safety. The Alliance focuses on reducing and preventing
exposure to rail and truck hazards common to industrial facilities.

Training and Education Goals
- Deliver or arrange for the delivery of rail and truck safety courses to the industrial minerals
industry.
The OSHA and IMA-NA Alliance has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.
Outreach and Communication Goals
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of
workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information
(e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools, OSHA's and IMA-NA's Web sites) to
employers and employees in the industry.

OSHA and IMA-NA Web Page
OSHA created and maintains an OSHA and IMA-NA Alliance Program Web page on the Agency's Web site.
The Web page includes links to the OSHA and IMA-NA Alliance agreement, a news release, activities
and events and other resources.
IMA-NA Rail Safety Program
Through the OSHA and IMA-NA Alliance, IMA-NA drafted a Rail Safety Program consisting of four
modules:
- Communication and Signals
- Blue Signal Protection
- Communication with Outside Rail Groups
- Working On and About the Equipment
Because OSHA has very little jurisdiction over activities outlined in this program, OSHA and IMA-NA
are discussing how to proceed with this project.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or IMA-NA's conferences local meetings or other events, such
as the Minerals Technology Workshop and IMA-NA Safety & Health Committee and Ergonomics Task Force.

IMA-NA Spring Meeting, April 25-26, 2007, Washington, D.C.
On April 26, 2007, Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation "The
Power of Prevention, Making the Business Case for Workplace Safety and Health" during the IMA-NA
Spring Meeting in Washington D.C. Following his speech, Mr. Foulke signed the OSHA and IMA-NA
Alliance agreement.
IMA-NA Annual Meeting, September 11-14, 2007, Moran, Wyoming
On September 14, 2007, Robert Stegall, Rio Tinto Minerals, gave an update on the OSHA and IMA-NA
Alliance during the IMA-NA Annual Meeting, September 11-14 in Moran, Wyoming.
- Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals though
IMA-NA's best practices or effective approaches and publicize results though outreach by IMA-NA and
through OSHA- or IMA-NA- developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars and lectures
(or any other applicable forum).
The OSHA and IMA-NA Alliance has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.
- Promote and encourage IMA-NA member participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the
Voluntary Protection Programs, the Consultation Program and its Safety and Health Achievement
Recognition Program.

Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
Goals
- Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings to help forge
innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues, including
rail and truck safety in industrial facilities.
2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, May 4-10, 2008
IMA-NA, along with number of other Alliance Program participants, is supporting NAOSH Week.
Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers, another Alliance Program
participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of
preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme of the 2008 NAOSH Week is "Safety is
Good Business."
- Executive Summary
Through the Alliance, OSHA and IMA-NA are working together to share safety and health information
and compliance assistance resources for the industrial minerals industry in particular focusing on
reducing and preventing exposure to rail and truck hazards common to industrial facilities.

of Prevention, Making the Business Case for Workplace Safety and Health" at the IMA-NA Spring
Meeting on April 26, 2007, in Washington D.C. In addition, during the IMA-NA Annual Meeting,

IV. Upcoming Milestones
During the upcoming year, IMA-NA will support 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health
(NAOSH) Week. In addition, OSHA will continue to update the OSHA and IMA-NA Alliance Web page on the
agency's Web site and IMA-NA will develop an IMA-NA and OSHA Alliance Web page on the association's
Web site. Further, OSHA and IMA-NA will continue to discuss the development of IMA-NA's Rail Safety
Program
