Activities and Products
This report summarizes alliance activities since November, 2016.
Alliance Activity
Alliance activities focus on "Introduction to OSHA" presentations as a part of the OSHA 10- Hour courses provided to apprentices and journeymen through the EJATT Training Center. OSHA did not conduct any "All About OSHA" presentations within the last year.
If needed, the facility is also available for projects through the Region V Training Committee.
An instructor, along with a Business Agent and Safety representative did attend a session on silica held at the Chicago South Area Office on October 31, 2017.
OTI Electrical Courses
The alliance continues to provide opportunities for OTI fieldtrips to the facility during the Electrical Standards course (#3090). During these field trips OTI instructors and students were provided training and documentation on Motor Control Concepts, transformer theory and the requirements of NFPA 70 E. The classes also toured the facility.
A field trip for the OTI Electrical Standards Course was held on January 31, 2017. There were approximately 23 Compliance Officers trained in the class.
Alliance Products
No specific outreach products have been developed through the alliance, but the PowerPoint presentations used during the Introduction to OSHA, blast / arc flash presentations and the training through the OTI are provided for use in other sessions.
Results
This alliance continues to be very successful in building a strong relationship between OSHA, specific electrical contactors in the area and the union's training facility. When initiated, the alliance focused on the emerging topic of arc flash / arc blast and was successful in presenting information on the subject. This has expanded to include Introduction to OSHA presentations as part of OSHA 10-Hour courses. With the majority of local electrical apprentices receiving training at the EJATT facility, the setting is ideal to continue the relationship with future tradesmen. All parties involved are very pleased with the activities and a strong relationship has developed.
Upcoming Milestones
Goals continue to focus on the OSHA 10-Hour courses and field-trips to the facility through the OTI and the Region V Training Committee. In the upcoming Fiscal Year there will be several OSHA 10 Hour courses held for 1st year apprentices at West Side Tech, in Chicago. In addition, EJATT is partnering with Chicago Builds, which is a program that is designed to train Chicago Public School (CPS) students in the trade. OSHA is in the process of trying to assist EJATT with this program. The facility has an extensive system of sample circuits and panel boards at which new and experienced CSHOs can receive background on associated hazards and industry practices for service and maintenance. In fact, the EJATT site is going through a major renovation which will include a multi-function room, new lobby, and additional classrooms. This may provide more opportunities for OSHA and EJATT to work together.
