Free Safety and Health Training at Safety Fest Tennessee

Safety Fest TN returns to Tennessee Sept. 12-16, featuring a safety expo, workshops, a community safety forum, and more than 80 free safety and health classes. The annual event is free and open to the public. Classes will be held at multiple locations in Oak Ridge and Knoxville. They cover topics ranging from chain saw safety to recordkeeping, as well as training for OSHA 10-hour, 30-hour and 40-hour cards.

Safety Fest TN draws exhibitors and participants from across Tennessee as well as nearby states of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia. It is sponsored by federal, state and local governments, large and small businesses, universities and colleges, and non-profit organizations, with the goal of improving safety at work, at home and in the community. Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) has teamed up with dozens of public and private companies; federal, state and local agencies; universities and colleges; and non-profit organizations to present Safety Fest TN. Employers and workers from across the state of Tennessee and neighboring states Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia have taken advantage of this annual event to get free safety and health training.

The week-long event is held in multiple locations in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, TN. It features safety and health experts leading more than 80 free classes, sessions, demonstrations, a safety forum, a community safety brunch, a safety expo, and a fire officer conference.

Types of Classes Offered: With a long list of subjects, there's a class or session designed for almost everyone, including safety and health professionals, managers, workers, and members of the public. Some of the many classes offered include Arc Flash Hazards, Back Safety, Chain Saw Safety, DOT General Awareness, Ergonomics, Fall Prevention, Human Performance Improvement, Incident Investigation, Ladder Safety, Machine Safety, Recordkeeping, Scaffolding, and OSHA 10-hour, 30-hour and 40-hour HAZWOPER certificate classes.

TOSHA was one of the initial partners of this event. In addition to presenting occupational safety and health classes, safety demonstrations from organizations as diverse as Pike Electric and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are presented. At the 2015 event, over 1,300 seats were registered by 850 people representing 172 organizations from 79 cities in 6 states. They came from large and small businesses, non-profits, labor unions, utilities and federal, state, and local governments.

TOSHA is part of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The central office is located in Nashville and there are five field offices in Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Kingsport, and Jackson. TOSHA offers voluntary and cooperative programs focused on reducing injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. It also offers on-site consultation services which help employers – both state and local government and private sector — comply with TOSHA or OSHA standards and identify and correct potential safety and health hazards.

TOSHA's outreach goes well beyond Safety Fest TN. Since 1977, the Tennessee Safety & Health Congress has been a joint venture between TOSHA and the American Society of Safety Engineers.  The Congress offers a series of educational seminars to help employers and employees improve workplace safety and health, learn more about the latest trends, equipment, best practices, and network with peers.
