• The Solution - Implemented limited lift policy consisting of four distinct phases resulting in a reduction of recordable injuries, lost workdays, and workers' compensations costs

In this success story, it was recognized that lost work day s at this facility were 2.5 times the average for all private industry in the U.S. The high rate of these on-the-job injuries was traced largely to three basic tasks: manual lifting; transferring and repositioning of patients.

The facility implemented a typical limited lift policy consisting of four distinct phases; evaluation and introduction (phase 1); education and assessment (phase 2); front-line employee involvement (phase 3); and program evaluation and appreciation (phase 4).

During phase 1, the current mechanical lifting equipment and resident acuity were evaluated. Staff examine available equipment on market and equipment ordered based on acuity, facility layout and staff input.

In phase 2, care giving staff was educated on policy directives and safe use of equipment.
In phase 3, staff was selected by director of nursing serve as product champions.
In phase 4, audits was completed of equipment, resident acuity and concern, and staff issues were discussed.
