Although there are many possible substitutes for silica sand in sandblasting, many of them can
create serious exposures to heavy metals and other contaminants. Use of substitutes in sandblasting
needs to be carefully evaluated.
It is important to keep employees who are not actively involved in sandblasting as far from the
work as possible.
