In this success story, insurance records indicated that there were 1,025 lost workdays as a result of occupational injuries involving patient handling tasks. This was a major contributor to the $628,511 incurred workers' compensation cost.
The efforts at Masonic Home was championed by the Assistant Director of Human Resources who realized the magnitude of the back injury problem at the institution. A risk management staff from the Workers' Compensation Trust provided strong support with data collection and highlighted the opportunities for financial savings if improvements could be made.
To begin the process for improvements, an initiation team consisting of CNAs, licensed nurses, representatives from various units at the nursing home was form. The team developed an ergonomic program consisting of training personnel, purchasing state-of-the art equipment , developing a financial incentive program to reduce back injuries.
