Speaker Notes: A different class of minerals which contain the same amount of
silicon are the silicates. Silicates have a basic ratio of atoms of silicon to
atoms of oxygen that corresponds to a chemical formula of SiO4. Silicates also
can contain other elements such as aluminum, magnesium, or lead. Examples of
silicates are mica, soapstone, talc, portland cement, fiberglass, mineral wools,
refractive ceramic fibers, and asbestos. This slide program will not deal with
silicates.
