Speaker Notes: Before we begin to talk about the hazards associated with
the inhalation of silica dust, we should define what a dust is.
Dust consists of solid particles generated by work processes that involve the
degeneration of material in some way, such as through pulvation, grinding,
blasting, drilling, crushing and so on of organic or inorganic materials, such
as rock, ore, metal, coal, wood, and grain. Dust particles do not tend to
flocculate, except under electrostatic forces; they do not diffuse in air but
settle under the influence of gravity. The particles may be as small as 0.1
micrometer in size, well below the visible range.
